A cigarette is a slender, cylindrical roll of finely cut tobacco leaves wrapped in thin paper designed for smoking. Often containing additives such as flavorings or preservatives, cigarettes are typically sold in packs and are one of the most common forms of tobacco consumption worldwide. Smokers ignite one end of the cigarette while inhaling the smoke through the other end, allowing nicotine and other chemicals to enter the lungs and bloodstream. This provides a temporary sense of relaxation or stimulation due to nicotine’s effects on the brain, but the process also exposes users to a wide range of harmful substances.

Cigarettes are closely associated with numerous health risks, primarily because of the many toxic chemicals released when the tobacco is burned. Inhaling cigarette smoke is a significant cause of lung cancer, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and strokes. The tar, carbon monoxide, and various carcinogens present in the smoke can severely damage respiratory and cardiovascular systems over time. Furthermore, secondhand smoke poses dangers to non-smokers, especially in enclosed environments, contributing to public health concerns.

Despite these risks, smoking remains a widely practiced habit due to the addictive nature of nicotine. Over time, various efforts have been made to reduce smoking rates, including public health campaigns, smoking bans in public places, and increased taxation on tobacco products. Many smokers turn to alternatives such as nicotine patches or electronic cigarettes (vapes) to quit or reduce their cigarette consumption. However, smoking continues to be a significant global health issue, causing millions of deaths annually.
