Any Indian festival seems to be incomplete without the traditional Indian festivities, such as gatherings, celebrations, exchange of sweets and gifts, lots of noise, singing, and dancing. Festivals are the celebration of togetherness as a united family, and the “Raksha Bandhan” festival is no exception.

As far as the traditions and rituals are concerned, sisters prepare the “pooja thali” with diyas, roli, chawal and rakhis. They worship the goddesses, tie rakhis on the wrists of their brother(s), and wish for their well-being. On the other hand, the brothers acknowledge their love with a promise that they will remain by their sisters’ side and protect them from every fall and down throughout their lives. Brothers also give token gifts to their sisters.

The history of Rakhi dates back to ancient times, showcasing various instances of its significance. One such well-known tale is that of Queen Karnavati and Emperor Humayun. When the kingdom of Chittor was under attack, Karnavati sent a Rakhi to Humayun, seeking his help and protection. Touched by the gesture, Humayun rushed to defend the kingdom. This tale illustrates the strength of the bond between siblings and the willingness to protect each other in times of need.

In today’s fast-paced world, where the demands of modern life often lead to busy schedules and distant relationships, Rakhi serves as a reminder to nurture and cherish family bonds. It encourages people to pause their routines and reaffirm the importance of family, love, and togetherness.

Well, that is a kind of an end to the rituals but the celebrations begin afterward. For the parents, the Raksha Bandhan festival is a means of family reunion. Tasty dishes, beautiful sweets, etc, are cooked on this day. Family members exchange gifts with other well-wishers and relatives and share their individual experiences of life with one another.
