Dutch immigrants to America brought the character of “Sinterklaas,” a figure based on Saint Nicholas. As we know him, the modern Santa Claus was heavily influenced by the famous 1823 poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” more commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas.” This poem, written by Clement Clarke Moore, introduced several key elements of the Santa Claus legend, including the reindeer, the sleigh, and the idea of Santa delivering gifts on Christmas Eve.

In the 1930s, the image of Santa Claus was further popularized and solidified through a series of Coca-Cola advertisements. Haddon Sundblom’s artwork depicted Santa as a jolly, rotund man with a white beard dressed in a red suit. This image of Santa became the quintessential representation, and it’s the one recognized worldwide today.
