Pineapple is a large tropical fruit with a wide cylindrical shape, a scaly green, brown or yellow skin, and a regal crown of spiny, green leaves and fibrous yellow flesh. The area closer to the base of the fruit has more sugar content and is there for a sweeter taste and a more tender texture.
Its plants grow to 1.0 to 1.5m (3 ft 3 in to 4 ft 11 in ) tall, although some can be taller. Pineapple is a perennial plant that flowers once and produces a single pineapple and then dies after fruiting; pineapple plants indeed die after the three-year cycle.
Commercial growers’ favored cultivar is ‘Smooth Cayenne,’ grown for its flavorful, seedless fruit and lack of spines. For commercial pineapple plant cultivation, the fruit is grown on a two to three-year fruit crop cycle that takes 32 to 46 months to complete and harvest.
