Tom and Jerry is an American animated media franchise and series of comedy short films created in 1940 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. The series centers on the rivalry between the titular characters, a cat named Tom and a mouse named Jerry.

Tom is the scheming cat, and Jerry is the spunky mouse. The series was driven entirely by action and visual humor; the characters rarely spoke. 164 Tom and Jerry series shorts were produced and released between 1940 and 2014. Of these, 162 are theatrical shorts, one is a made-for-TV short, and one is a 2-minute sketch shown as part of a telethon.
No matter how many obstacles come their way, both Tom and Jerry are never willing to accept defeat. They try over and over again, no matter how many times they fail. They are an example of perseverance; none is willing to give up.
Their full names are Thomas Jasper Cat, Sr., and Gerald Jinx Mouse, and as CNET sister site ComicBook.com points out, some fans weren’t expecting that name game.

After some time, the studio found that re-releases of older cartoons were earning as much as new ones, resulting in the executive decision to cease production on Tom and Jerry and later the animation studio on May 15, 1957. The final cartoon produced by Hanna and Barbera, Tot Watchers, was released on August 1, 1958.
